On April 16, 2014, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) marked a major milestone for its pony carclass heritage after launching a Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition convertible on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building.

Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford said, “When Mustang was approved for development more than 50 years ago, I don’t think anyone imagined it would spawn such a dedicated base of fans around the world and still be in production today. We are thrilled to be here in New York – where Mustang was first shown to the public at the 1964 World’s Fair – to re-create that historic event for today’s Mustang enthusiasts.”

Ford reported that the special edition Mustang is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 that can deliver 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, based on the 2014 Mustang GT fastback with performance pack and comes standard with almost every available option. Dave Pericak, Mustang Chief Engineer, commented, “Mustang fans love to drive their cars, even the rarer examples of the breed, so we built this limited-edition from the best-performing 2015 Mustang available – the GT fastback with the performance pack.”

Performance Package Mustang GT models are known for having six-piston Brembo front brakes, 19-inch alloys, and high-performance summer rubber. Only 1,964 units of the 2015 Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition will ever be built. Buyers may choose between Wimbledon White and Kona Blueand six-speed manual transmission and six-speed automatic transmissions for the rear-wheel drive coupe. The Company stated that this is the first time that is offering its Performance Package with an automatic gearbox.

The exterior of the new Mustang is nonpareil with the subtle chrome highlights and louvered rear quarter windows which are comprised of layered sheets of glass built with a construction technique that was especially designed for the Limited Edition. Moray Callum, Ford Vice President of Design, noted, “Chrome trim was much more prevalent on cars in the 1960s than it is today, so we added some discreet highlights on the grille, side glass, and tri-bar traillamps. The darker Kona Blue provides a particularly striking contrast against the chrome.”

The other notable touches include a faux gas cap badge on the rear fascia, a cashmere-stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel, with the same appointments carried to the instrument panel, shifter boot, center armrest, door inserts, and seats. “The new Mustang blends a muscular, contemporary shape with design cues that define it as quintessentially Mustang,” said Callum. “The 50 Year Limited Edition adds details that set it apart from other Mustangs, while hearkening back to the 1965 original.”

There are loop-carpet floor mats with cashmere stitching and suede binding that cannot be found in other models. The Mustang 50 Year logo is on the seat backs of the two-tone cashmere and black leather upholstery.

As a showpiece, a true American machine, and a Ford innovation, Pericak stated, “While some collectors will undoubtedly stash this car away in a museum, those who choose to hit the open road will get a world-class sports car that can run with the best.”
