Mazda just announced that they will going to supply diesel into the incoming new Skyactiv-D engine for the 2013 season. The race engine will be using a stock 2.2 liter block with a two stage turbo injected on it, which is similar to their production version. Maximum engine speed sits relatively ideal at 5,200 rpm and it uses a very low 14:1 compression ratio which in turn if you are keeping track the lowest diesel compression ratio in the world.

According to Mazda the 2013 Skyactive-D is a full 10 percent lighter than the previous and outgoing 2.2 liter MZR-CD diesel. And from that, it will generate up to 20 percent better fuel consumption because it partially reduce 20 percent internal friction. So far, Mazda hasn’t released any information on how much power race teams can expect to glean from the diesel mill, but the standard production unit is good for 173 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque and a gloriously-low 2,000 rpm.
